The time is now to start teaching digital fluency and coding as part of literacy. Being literate in today's world, includes computer literacy.
Luckily, there are organizations, such as Code.org, dedicated to giving students opportunities to learn computer science.
How do you get started?
Below are a few places for getting started:
Device | Elementary | Secondary |
---|---|---|
iPad | Daisy the Dinosaur Tickle (older app) Hopscotch Scratch Jr. Cargo-Bot |
Tickle |
Laptop/Desktop | Scratch Grok Blockly |
Scratch Snap Grok |
Various | Code.org Lightbot |
Khan Academy Code.org |
Final thoughts
There are so many more resources/sites available on multiple platforms than those aforementioned.
- What are your favorite coding/programming sites to use with students?
- How are you building STEM opportunities in your classroom/school/district?
Great post. For elementary, don't forget Kodable. They have a K -5 curriculum now. Students in our school use the app on their iPads. Kodable School allows teachers to set up their classes and track progress.
